The impact of policies on child well-being in Europe
8 April 2014, 10:00 am -12:00 pm, Antwerp
Abstract:
For obvious reasons, the well-being of children should be high on the agenda of civil society, researchers and policy makers. This was recognised by the European Commission, when she published the Recommendation “Investing in children: breaking the cycle of disadvantage” in February 2013. In this Recommendation, the Commission clearly reserves an important role for policy makers to improve the well-being of children in Europe. Within this context, in this seminar, we discuss some recent evidence and work in progress on the relation between a range of social policies and child well-being in Europe. We pay particular attention to the importance of social spending, employment, child benefits and the organisation of effective childcare services for improving the well-being of children. We scrutinise existing policies in order to identify good practices and potential pitfalls. At the same time, we reflect on more ambitious proposals for improving child well-being in Europe, such as an EU-wide child basic income.
