The workshop aims at addressing the challenge mixed methods have to face in attempting to overcome the quantitative-qualitative dichotomy in research design. In particular the argument will be developed through three parts:
1) The first part highlights the pros and cons of quantitative and qualitative research considering both methods and data sources.
2) The second part reconstructs the epistemological reasons for aiming at a mixed methods solutions and the difficulties it entails considering the type and quality of data.
3) The third part addresses concrete research design issues on how to translate the method into research practices. The improve project will be used as a case.
This workshop will provide input for work package 14, especially regarding the cross-fertialisation between the quantitative and qualitative research carried out within the ImPRovE project.
