Five hundred years later, the book is still famous for its social criticism and for its intellectual experiment of imagining a \u2018utopian society\u2019 based on entirely different principles, such as the abolition of private property.<\/p>\n<p>More\u2019s introduction to the book is a letter addressed to his good friend Peter Giles (Pieter Gillis), Flemish humanist and town clerk of Antwerp at that time. More and Giles were also good friends to Erasmus. The narrative framework of <em>Utopia<\/em> is to be located in Antwerp, where the fictitious character Hythlodaeus supposedly engaged in conversation with More and Giles, and related about his adventures as a seaman on an island named \u2018Utopia\u2019, situated in the New World.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Centre Pieter Gillis and the Herman Deleeck Centre for Social Policy (University of Antwerp) want to celebrate this anniversary by organizing an academic event in Antwerp about <em>Utopia<\/em> and its meaning in past and present, and by framing the annual Pieter Gillis lecture around More\u2019s <em>Utopia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This day on <em>Utopia<\/em> also constitutes the opening event of the final conference of ImPRovE, a research project about poverty reduction in Europe.<\/p>\n<table width=\"653\" bgcolor=\"F0E8E8\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"153\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"500\"><strong>Discussing <em>Utopia<\/em> Today<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"153\">14:00 \u2013 15:00<\/td>\n<td width=\"500\"><strong>Thomas More\u2019s <em>Utopia<\/em> as a Dystopia in its Particular Place in Time<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Prof. dr.
